CD-ROM CR-563-x Matsushita/Panasonic

Post by Leath » Tue, 17 Jan 1995 12:40:31

I'm trying to install Linux (Slackware dist. from InfoMagic CD-ROM).

My system is:
Packard Bell Model: Legend 5200 Multi-media
Pentium-60, PCI bus.
CD-ROM: Panasonic/Matsushita CR-563-x

My CD-ROM is not auto-detected by the "sbpcd" boot disk.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
Is there a patch that I need to obtain?
Any information would be helpful.

Thanks!

You might want to insure that the drive is jumpered to be drive 0.  I
chased this through 5 patchlevels over 4 months before pulling the drive
and checking...  Darn drive worked great with DOS/Windoze when not
jumpered...  Also check base address for drive, usu. default to 230h I
think, but I thought I heard that pci might use usual sbpcd defaults???

good luck.

So, do one of the following:

*  get aware of the address you are using for it (your CONFIG.SYS
possibly can tell it to you, or the DOS driver) and enter it
   to the LILO: prompt like
      LILO boot: ramdisk sbpcd=0x310,LaserMate
   or
      LILO boot: ramdisk sbpcd=0x634,SoundBlaster
with the correct values for address and interface type.

*  jumper your interface to one of the many probed addresses.

If your interface sits on one of those "modern" jumperless sound cards,
you should boot DOS before and switch over to Linux by CTL-ALT-DEL.

1.) Numerical wrong.

2.) Default is what I am using. ;-)

Formerly, I had a SB Pro soundcard - so, "your" default was 0x230.
Since I switched over to a Mozart sound card (at about 1.1.7x), you
have to fight against 0x340.

As a compensation, you no longer have to finger with the damned ID jumpers
since 1.1.81 if you only have one drive. ;-)

Further, don't forget the "longest ever" auto-probing address list (but I
try to refuse to touch a possible present NE2000 ethernet card at 0x10 above
it's base address; so, try to avoid 0x290, 0x310, 0x330, 0x350, 0x370).

What interface are you using ?
If you give as much reasonable info as possible, help
is much more likely.

Surely you're not suggesting that a person should _read the documentation_
which came with the drive when purchased, are you...?  eeyuck!!!>

1. Does a Panasonic CR-563-B CD-ROM drive act like a CR-562?

I can't get the Fall '93 Yggdrasil Linux CD-ROM to boot up
on my PC.  I have a 586 box with a Panasonic CR-563-B drive
connected to a sound-less interface card ("Golden" brand).
The drive works find under DOS, but Linux does not seem to be
aware of its existance.  I have the interrupt disconnected
(the jumper on the card completely removed), but as far as I
know, the Linux driver doesn't use the interrupt.  The base address
is 310H.

Should this setup work?  Is the 563 drive really different than the 562?
Can I get a updated boot disk or something what will work with this drive?

Thanks,

Doug Braun
