Hi,

can I do to fix it :

Error message at the boot time :

Mounting /dev/pst.modprobe : modprobe : can't locate module devpts
mount : fs type devpts not supported by kernel

My kernel release is 2.2.13 and is compiled as folow :

Missing from "Filesystems":
CONFIG_DEVPTS_FS=y

Msiing from "Character devices ":
CONFIG_UNIX98_PTYS=y
CONFIG_UNIX98_PTY_COUNT=512
(the count may be much lower, I need the above, but make it 128
or 256 on a normal desktop PC).

Mounting fs type devpts error

I think you mean /dev/pts?

Quote:>modprobe : modprobe : can't locate module devpts

I answered this just a day or two ago; do please use
http://www.deja.com/.

Turn this on.

Quote:>My "fstab" file looks like :

Since you're getting this error, some script or other is already trying
to mount /dev/pts, so this shouldn't be a problem.

A bit of background: recently, Linux changed its system of terminal
devices for xterms and remote logins. The new version involves a virtual
filesystem mounted on /dev/pts, and requires glibc 2.1 and kernel 2.2 or
above to work. If you don't have either of these, stick to the old
system; look for something in your initialization scripts which is
trying to mount /dev/pts, and disable it. Without knowing which
distribution you're using, I can't say for certain where this is
happening.

*Please* don't do this. This post was pretty long as it is (not that I'm
complaining, it's good to have plenty of information), and this made it
over twice the size with no extra information! Please turn off HTML when
you're posting to newsgroups.

1. uuups: [mount: fs type devpts not supported by kernel] + [MODULES]

Uuuups, forgot to give my real email in the previous message.
Sorry about that.

So my email is: anquetil "at" site.uottawa.ca

And the question was:

----
I just recompiled the kernel (2.2.5-15) and removed many things that I
didn't need.

But now I have a some "warning" messages that I would like to tackle:

mount: fs type devpts not supported by kernel

I think I can remove this by saying `mount -a -t nodevpts' somewhere in
rc.d, but what is this devpts filesystem.  should I rather "reinclude"
it in the kernel ?

I also have warnings:
modprobe: can't locate module lo:1
modprobe: can't locate module lo:2
...
modprobe: can't locate module lo:48

What is this module `lo' ?
Same thing how to remove the warning message or to reinclude the needed
kernel?

----------------

Sligthly different question although related:

How do I make a link between a module name (such as `lo' or `ad1848') to

its "function".
and vice-versa.

I have this problem with lo right now, I already had problems with
ad1848, it took me an hour or so to figure out that was the module in
charge of my sound card.

I am sure I have a very naive view on the problem since many modules
seem very specialized (for example to use my iomega ZIP drive, I need a
dozen of them), but some more information would be welcome.

Thanks

nicolas
