ADSL setup ... and DISPLAY variable

Post by timpi » Thu, 31 May 2001 16:15:02

Hello there,

Via RedHat 6.2 box I'm connecting to my ISP ... except when I try to
display certain X programs on
my PC.   telnet, ftp, everything works fine ... but when I set my
DISPLAY variable to the IP address
the DHCP server gave me it does not work.  The remote machine doesn't
seem to be able to ping
this address ....
When I use ssh everything works ... but of course secure shell sets up
the DISPLAY variable to the apropriate
value.
Any idea how I can get around this ... since not evey machine has ssh I
cannot work all the GUI's

Here's my situation :

1. How to setup Display variable?

I am working on installing a software in a web server which has Linux
running on it. I am connected to the server using SecureCRT. When I
tried to run the installation program I got the following warning:

"
WARNING:  This shell's DISPLAY variable has not been set.
A valid display is required to execute this setup in GUI
mode. To execute in GUI mode, set the DISPLAY variable to
your local UNIX host, or execute this setup from a UNIX
host which has the DISPLAY variable set. To execute in
console mode, run this script with a -c option.

"

Could anyone please tell me how to set up this Display variable. It
would be easier for me if I could install using GUI.

Thanks for any help.
