My chipset is unsupported so I tried generic and unsupported in
Xconfiguratot...

startx still comes up with a blank screen....

What could I do know??

I think you can work out 800x600 on a Trident card ( I once helped one
of my friends get this done). As far as I can remember, just goto
XFree86 website
(www.xfree86.org ?), there r directions for Trident card.

I only saw two Q&A on the 9680 card, but it doesn't say which X Server to
use for Trident.
