Are you using kppp?
* be sure pppd is the binary and not a script.
* be sure that pppd  is setuid root
* be sure  /etc/ppp/options exist and there are no wrong entries, when
you are not sure, leave it empty.
* uncheck the option use lock file
* remove the  lock  in /etc/ppp/options
* if the symbolic link /dev/modem causes problems,.
            Use the real port ( -> setup->modem->device)
            ttyS0 -> COM1
            ttyS1 -> COM2
            ttyS2 -> COM3
            ttyS3 -> COM4

I guess because the pppd daemon died.
Your connection did not succeed. Possibly because you have not set up
kppp properly.

For a non-kppp
For step by step instructions about setting up ppp under Linux, see

I'm having this problem on my 6.1 Workstation.  I'm following up with
RH 6.1 update for ppp.  Hear it's a bug...

1. PPP and PPP and PPP and PPP and PPP and HEADACHE

I made a trick .. instead of using chat to connect PPP like was in the
books
(that for me doesn't work) I used dip (it's the one that is supposed to be
used with SLIP connections) .. I make a script for dip so it connects using
PPP, and everything goes fine till I connect... After I connect the host
where i'm connected is Okay and everything seems to be Okay. but when I do
I simple ping to my own IP (not localhost but my assigned fixed IP) it says
unable to reach host.. I think the hardest thing to setup in linux is PPP
:( .. geee...

I have the Slackware 3.0 stuff... and I feel like i'm a newbie.. :(

Is out there any better FAQs or How-TOs for the PPP connections ???

bye !
