After some experimentation it looks more like instead of my problems getting
X to run in 256 colors having to do with my card setup it probably has more
to do with my Monitor settings. So here's the dirt on both my card and monitor
in the hopes that someone can either show me the settings to use in XF86Config
or point me to where I can find the info I need. I don't have a manual for my
monitor so if anyone has one and can give me the vert refresh rate, horizontal
freq and anything else I need I would very much appreciate it.

Video Card: Realtek RT-3106 with 1Meg DRAM
Monitor:    GoldStar 1423 plus

Thanks!

O.k. I found out that the moitor has a maximum horizontal scan rate
of 31.5 kHz and a maximun vertical scan rate of 70 Hz.  From this
information you are probably limited to doing 1024x768 interlaced.

You will need to have XF86 3.1.2 and use the svga serrver.  And your
card is only supported in 256 colors.  you probably should run
the xf86config program to generate an XF86Config file and then
while running X, use xvidtune to adjust the videomodes.  you will
have to add the adjusted video modes by hand to your XF86Config
file.

Hope this helps

Well xf86 can do any video mode your monitor can handle.  What you
should do to get started is comment out all the modelines in your
xf86config and add the following line:

Modeline "640x480"     25.175 640  664  760  800   480  491  493  525

This one should work

No, vidtune is an x11 program that allows you to center and change the
size of the screen and then make an appropriate mode line.

If you still have problems e-mail me a copy of your xf86config and the
output from running startx.

Yup! The above Horizontal and Vertical scan rates are indeed correct as
I found somewhere on the web while I was trying to figure this thing out
but I _think_ the SVGA server requires a monitor that is capable of
higher frequencies to run in 1024X768 mode unless I misunderstood
something somewhere.

Gave this a shot but loading it up yielded a screenful of garbage. Is
xvidtune the same as holding ctrl-alt and plus or minus or is this
another application to run from X? I may just be SOL trying to do this
with my current hardware but figured it would be worth a try since I am
able to get 256 colors under Windoze 3.1 and Netscape 2.02 out of it.

I appreciate the feedback and if you have any other ideas please let
me know.

1. Realtek RT-3106 Supported?

Hi! I'm trying to get XFree86 to work in 256 color SVGA mode with my
Realtek RT-3106 graphics card. The list of supported cards says this
one is among those supported but everything I've tried so far in XF86Config
has produced unusable results. Is there someone else out there with this
card who has had some success and would be so kind as to share your
XF96Config settings with me or point me in the right direction for the
information I need. Thanks!
