I have just installed Linux mandrake 6.0 (nearly).  I bought a copy of
Partition
Magic5 and partitioned the hard drive as 10GB (win98) 4GB (Linux) 128MB
(Linux swap), I have managed to install Linux ok (nearly) on the 4GB
partition.  The problems I have now are when booting up BootMagic2 kicks in
but Linux is not available just win98 is this because of the Lilo thing, I
skipped that part in installation as in a magazine article I was reading on
how to set up a dual boot system it said that if Linux asks to install a
boot manager not to as BootMagic does all that.

However I did manage to boot Linux from a floppy disk created in
installation,, everything loaded up fine except the screen was set at the
wrong resolution or something as everything was about 10 times to big (the
bottom left hand corner of the desktop takes up all the screen if you know
what I mean)so maybe I have chosen the wrong monitor during installation, is
there anyway I can change this and what monitor should I choose (I have a
Proview 17" which isn't listed, so I chose Non-Interlaced SVGA 800x600)  Oh
and I have a Voodoo3 200 AGP which isn't listed either so I just chose
unlisted card.

If  I can sort out the Monitor thing I suppose I could just uninstall
BootMagic and boot Linux of the floppy disk.

Anyway thanks again for all the help.

Bryan

Bryan,

When you initially setup your Linux partitions you would have made a 6-10Mb
/boot partition where Lilo would be installed and set to default to
boot=Linux.

There is this quirky little thing with BootMagic... if the above was
done... and before installing Linux... you should have disabled BootMagic.

Once, Linux was installed and after rebooting you would have been brought
back into WinDoze, at which time, you would then re-enable BootMagic to
find your new Linux now being shown.

As far as your monitor, you need to read the specs within the literature,
which came with your monitor, and set the resolutions accordingly using
either Xconfigurator or XF86Config.

I had a similar problem with a Banshee card as you do with the Voodoo3
card, I went to DiamondMM.com, now S3, to find an Xserver which would run
the card. You may have to do a little research on that one or you might see
if Mandrake 7.0 supports the card.

Hope this helps,

1. Java color/graphics problem on Solaris 2.6/SS20 with SX graphics ...

Hi,

I've recently upgraded our SS20 with SX graphics to 2.6, HW 5/98 and now
found out that our Java programs (with both, JDK1.1.6 reference
implementation and JDK1.1.6 production release) suddenly appear with
distorted colors and graphics. Big colored areas look o.k. but drawn lines
appear to have something like a shadow in another color.

I have applied the latest (Aug. 10th) recommended Patches.

Does anyone know a cure for that? I suppose an Xsun patch or something
should be available. I already have 105633-05 installed but it does
not help.

Thanks // Tom
