RedHat 5.0 install crash - signal 11, shutdown, etc

Post by paulra.. » Wed, 07 Jan 1998 04:00:00

I've seen tons of messages about this, but has anybody actually found
a solution to it? My upgrade from RedHat 4.2 crashes just after it
scans for available packages; I've watched what it's doing in the other
sessions.

I read up on the redhat product errata about what to do if this
happens during the "upgrading packages" stage, but I tried installing
the rpm-2.4 package manually like they said and it still crashes
at that stage.

I downloaded the entire "RedHat" directory (the one with "base", "dosutils"
etc in it) and put it onto my harddrive. I've tried this on a couple of other
PC's and I get the same problem.

Thanks in advance
-Paul

I have the same problem.  I downloaded the whole redhat 5.0 directory
from the redhat ftp site (dosutils, base, Rpms etc..) onto my
harddrive.  The setup goes smoothly until i get to the point where it
asks me the disk partition and directory for my base and rpm files.
After entering the info and hitting enter it displays:
"Scanning available packages" for a second or two and then get this
error message :
read failed : Sucess (0)
install exit abnormally -- received signal 11
sending termination signals ... done
sending kill signals ... done
unmounting file systems...
   /tmp/hdimage
   /tmp/image
   /proc
you may safely reboot your systerm

I've installed slackware several times without a hitch.  I'm
considering just reinstalling slackware.

I had the same problem too.  However, the installer seemed to get
pretty far before giving me the error, however, so I worked around it
by installing a bare bones system (200MB) the first time through, then
using glint to patch up to my full installation.  I KNOW this isn't
pretty, but it worked...

I am right there with you folks. I have tried multiple ftp servers,
NFS and hard disk installs all with the same results. Is RedHat up to
something? Are they trying to force us to buy the CD? I'll be damn'd
if I buy RedHat 5.0 with all the problems I am seeing in the news
groups. Move over Microsoft, there is someone new releasing buggy
software and you are going to have to share the title.

Maybe LinuxPRO instead of RedHat?

1. While installing RedHat 5.0 : "install exited abnormally -- recieved signal 11"

I installed Redhat 5.0 (as a newbie) some days ago (no problems there).

after fooling around a bit, I decided to make a fresh installation, in
EXACTLY THE SAME WAY like I did before :

the installation-set is on my 2nd harddrive (400 MB), (/dev/hdb1)
I boot with the 2 installationdisk (boot-disk + supplemental)
I create the necessar partitions on my first harddisk (1 GB) with Disk Druid
(/dev/hda..)
it formats the swap-partition without any problems,
when asked, I give the path where the redhat-distribution is located
(/redhat)
and when he starts scanning the available packages, after a while he gives
messages (corrupting the installation display) like :
"install exited abnormally -- recieved signal 11"
"sending termination signals ... done"
"sending kill signals ... done"
"unmounting filesystems ..."

and so on ...

any comments or a solution for my problem ??

thx,

Lightningbit
