Hello,

I planning on installing Linux on a P90 system.  Which distribution
would you recommend, Slackware or Redhat, or any others?  Your
comments will be appreciated.

thanks,

I didn't ask and went ahead with Slackware.  Since then, when I got new
hardware, at the prodding of local gurus I installed Red Hat.  (I know
nothing about any of the others.)

There's no question, Red Hat is the easier to install and to maintain.
That said, I'm glad I did Slackware first.  I think I learned a lot
about Linux (and, for that matter, about UNIX and about my computer)
that I would not have learned otherwise by having installed two
different distributions and specifically (I believe) by having installed
Slackware first.

No matter which you choose, kernel 2.0 is now out and contains great
stuff not *yet* available in any distribution that I know of.  So,
install something -- whatever -- and as soon as you feel you're up to
it, upgrade your kernel.

And have fun.

One important point that is seldom mentioned by people responding to
similar queries is that RedHat is heavily oriented towards XWindow, the Unix
GUI.

If you enjoy using a GUI, consider RedHat.  If you're one of those
who can't stand a GUI, like me, RedHat is not for you.  IMHO, if X were
required to use Linux, you might as well stay with Micro$oft and look at
Windoze.

Unless you want to run X a lot, I would suggest Slackware. A lot of
effort went into making the windows install in RH look as spiffy as a MS
product, which helps marketing but puts you on ahell of a learning curve
if you don't want to do X a lot.

1. Upgrading: Which to choose Redhat, Debnian or Slackware

I've recently become interested in operating system concepts and
compiler implementation. Since I believe this will be much simpler in
Linux then in Windows, I would like to upgrade my version of Linux
( I just picked up InfoMagics Dec 1996 version). Now I have to decide,
which version of Linux to go with. I am not particularly interested in
the difficulty installing it. I am interested  simply in the tools
available in each package, as well as the interoperatability of each
tool ( eg the version of flex is compatible with the version of gcc ).
Can anyone advise me?
Thanks in advance.
