Intermittent error at boot : VFS: Cannot open root device 00:30

Post by Romuald Bonvi » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

Hello,

I installed RedHat 6.0 on my Siemens Scenic 400. I append dmesg for list of
hardware.

At boot time, I get a fatal panic (but quite intermittent, sometimes it
starts correctly...)

It says :
Partition check:
 hda: hda1 hda2 < hda5 hda6 >
 hdb: hdb1
autodetecting RAID arrays
autorun ...
... autorun DONE.
VFS: Cannot open root device 00:30
Unable to mount root fs on 00:30

Any idea of what goes wrong. Otherwise, when it boots correctly, everything
is fine.

Thanks.

1. Boot from loadlin fails: VFS: Cannot open root device 03:42

I am trying to boot from C:\ via loadlin onto Redhat 5.1 on /dev/hda2
Big disk (14.4 Gb, used fips to make room for partitions)

fdisk:
255 heads, 63 sector, 1024 cylinders (there are more...)
        /dev/hda1    1    1   990 7952143+   c  Unknown
        /dev/hda2  991  991  1121 1052257+  83  Linux native
        :

I copied the vmlinux file (I recompiled the kernel) to C:\ and booting
proceeds OK (similar to that of the floppy boot disk I made), until
this occurs:

VFS: Cannot open root device 03:42
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount  root fs on 03:42

Is this the 1024 cylinder limitation in BIOS in a new disguise?? Is
there anything I can do to boot successfully via loadlin?

Regards,

Dag
