Red Hat 5.1 / SMC W/D8003E / Soundblaster 16 - help?

Post by Leigh Dodd » Tue, 10 Nov 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

I took the plunge this weekend and installed Linux for the first time.
I have to say I'm pleased with how smooth it all went, however I
can't get my Soundblaster 16 nor my network card to work. I'd
appreciate some help/pointers if possible.

The network card is an SMC W/D8003E. Or at least thats the driver that works
for it under Windows 95. Theres the option for hardware or software config.
I have the jumper set to disable software config. The card is set to IRQ3.
This works fine under Windows95/98/NT. However the
card isn't in the HCL for Red Hat 5.1, although the SMC Ultra and I believe
one other SMC card.
Does anyone know if I can get a driver for my card, or how I can configure
another driver to use
it correctly?

The soundblaster also works fine under Windoze. I had the IRQ set to 7. This
was done through
software under Windows, I'm not sure how to set the jumpers on the card to
do this manually. Its not a PnP card either. I think its not working as its
clashing with the network card somehow (I've had problems like this under
windows but resolved them successfully). I have already looked at the Sound
HOW-To without success.

Help much appreciated. Please answer my email as well at to the newsgroup.

Thanks.

L.

Sure is.  Try the WD80x3 driver (maybe called WD8013 or WD8003, but it works
the same)

(there would be a smart-arsed comment here...
...but I can't think of one!)

(there is now a pgp signature here...
 ...I got it to work!!!)

        wd.o
This is a driver for WD8003 and WD8013 "compatible" ethercards.

You didn't say which distribution, does it have any config tools? e.g. sndcfg
that will try probing for you.   Try playing around with
        insmod sound.o
(assuming you have a module-aware kernel).  My SB16 is set up with:
        alias sound sb
        options -k sb io=0x220 irq=9 dma=3,7
        alias midi opl3
        options -k opl3 io=0x388

in /etc/conf.modules.

1. Red Hat 5.0 vs. Red Hat 5.1

Hello everybody - what a beautiful day it is! Let's not get to funked
up, and get yourself a nice little pink flower to put in a orange vase.
Then grab yourself a slice and sit down and enjoy yourself. It can be
done in lot's of different ways -- just go ahead and do it under the
green sun.

Well... Nevermind.

I'm planning to buy Red Hat 5.1 official to replace my Red Hat 5.0 with.
But before I do that I wonder if there are any disadvantages, hazards or
such with RH 5.1, compared to RH 5.0. Is the installation as safe (don't
forget LILO), and things such as X, sound-support, printers and ppp -
are they still well supported, and not buggy or so?

Thanks in advance,

/Henrik

By the way, don't let the opening of this letter make you think that I'm
not serious enough.
