Problem with: chsh, updatedb

Post by Ken Kamd » Fri, 21 Jul 1995 04:00:00

Hi everyone,
  I just installed Linux on my machine and everythig seems to work fine...
except for chsh and updatedb.  There could be other things wrong but have not
discovered them yet.  I installed linux on a p75 with 16M ram and with cd-rom
ide and another scsi drive.  Oh by the way that reminds me linux does not
recognize two of my scsi partitions, it only recognizes the first.  But back
to me original question.  I try changing the shell for a user account, it
says the shell is changed but it isn't.  The list of shells is located in the
/etc/shells file.  I have tried to change it from root as well, but to no
avail.  It seems the only way to change the shell is to go in the passwd file
and change it there.  I also can't seem to get updatedb to work as well.  I
haven't the foggiest idea of what to do.  Please help if you can.

Thanks
Ken

Read the ftp.netcom.com:/pub/ze/zenon/linux/tmp/SimpleFixes2.2.0

The problems and fixes with chsh and updatedb are there included.

1. passwd, chsh, chpass, chfn, chsh problem

hi,

i'm using freebsd 4.6.2 with own recompiled kernel, my problem is that
when i try to use some of $subject utilities it takes a long time
(about one minute) to execute them, i tried to strace chsh and here is
a result:

...

socket(PF_INET, SOCK_DGRAM, IPPROTO_UDP) = 4
getsockname(4, {sin_family=AF_INET, sin_port=htons(0),
sin_addr=inet_addr("0.0.0.0")}}, [16]) = 0
getsockopt(4, IPPROTO_IP, 19, [0], [4]) = 0
setsockopt(4, IPPROTO_IP, 19, [2], 4)   = 0
bind(4, {sin_family=AF_INET, sin_port=htons(0),
sin_addr=inet_addr("0.0.0.0")}}, 16) = 0
ioctl(4, FIONBIO, [1])                  = 0
sendto(4, "\203\7\312
\0\0\0\0\0\0\0\2\0\1\206\240\0\0\0\2\0\0\0\3"..., 56, 0,
{sin_family=AF_INET, sin_port=htons(111),
sin_addr=inet_addr("127.0.0.1")}}, 16) = 56

this message is repeated so many times:

gettimeofday({1035209143, 831286}, NULL) = 0
select(5, [4], NULL, NULL, {5, 0})      = 0 (Timeout)
sendto(4, "\203\7\312
