XFree86 & ATI Rage Pro 3D

XFree86 & ATI Rage Pro 3D

Post by Matthew Denne » Thu, 04 Dec 1997 04:00:00

thanks to everyone who helped with my hard disk problems: turns out
that adding linear to the lilo.conf file and reinstalling LILO helped
the system boot.

but i still have some problems with XFree86 now.  both of the new
computers i am installing have ATI 3D Rage Pro AGP 2X video chipsets
(or that's what the first line on the chips says).  i installed my
XFree86 from a CD and got version 3.3.0.  reading some FAQ shows
that i should upgrade to 3.3.1 (which i did: downloaded files,
ran preinst.sh, extract on all files, and then postinst.sh).  i then
configured the display for XFree86 using XF86Setup and this is where
my problems began (i started with a new configuration):

1. i can't find a specific mention of my chipset (only RageII+, etc)
2. selecting any of the Rage entries causes the screen to go black
(and not response to Ctrl-Alt-Backspace) when starting X

thinking ahead i ran SuperProbe 2.15 (August 1997) and got the
following:

Chipset: ATI (chipset unknown) (Port Probed)
                 Signature data 333f003c (please report)
        Memory:  0 Kbytes
        RAMDAC:  Generic 8-bit pseudo-color DAC
(with 6-bit wide lookup tables (or in 6-bit mode))

anyone know how to get these cards to work with XFree86?

again, please email me aswell as post because my news server is flaky

Cheers
Matt

XFree86 & ATI Rage Pro 3D

Matthew,

You've got the right version, so now all you do is pick one of the Rage
supports from the Mach64 server, then after you have saved the file, you
will have to edit the XF86Config file located in /etc/X11

Go to the section on "My Video Card"

Add the following lines:
VideoRam    xxxx    <whatever you card has>
ChipId    0x4754
ChipRev 0x01

Save the file and you should be OK.

You also could look at www.angelfire.com/ca/rchau/patch.html for more
information.

1. HELP: XFree86 3.3.1 & ATI 3D Pro Turbo (3D Rage II+DVD)

This message is in MIME format.  The first part should be readable text,
while the remaining parts are likely unreadable without MIME-aware tools.

I have seen many people asking for help with this video card and
none of the answers I have seen worked for me.  I just recently upgraded
to a Pentium Pro 180 and an ATI 3D Pro Turbo PC2TV w/8MB SGRAM.  Some more
pertinent details:
        CPU:  Intel Pentium Pro 180
        MB:  Intel Venus 440FX
Video:  ATI 3D Pro Turbo PC2TV w/8MB SGRAM
Kernel:  Linux 2.0.30 i486 (APM features are enabled; does that
                make a difference?)
        XF86:  3.3.1
        GCC:  2.7.2.3
        LibC:  5.4.38
Monitor:  KFC (generic; no KF Chicken jokes please) 15"
I have included the output from startx (error3.txt) and my config file
(XF86Config).  When I start X windows (with 'startx') all I get is a blank
screen.  I know the monitor is still getting a signal because it doesn't
power itself down.  The screen is just black.  If you need any more
details, do not hesitate to ask.  I need help, PLEASE!!!
