Booting LILO off /dev/hdb

Booting LILO off /dev/hdb

Post by Chris Lace » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

Hi,

I am attempting to install LILO to the MBR of my primary slave hard disk
(/dev/hdb) so that I can tell my BIOS to boot from the second IDE hard disk
if I want to use LILO, and from the first IDE disk if I don't.

However, after having installed LILO using lilo -b /dev/hdb , and setting up
the BIOS appropriately, all LILO does is print "LI" and then crash.  I have
also tried to install it to /dev/hdb1 and mark this (the linux boot
partition) as bootable in fdisk, but also to no avail.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to get round this problem?  The
documentation seems to imply that LILO shouldn't be installed on a second
HDD, because it won't get booted that way, but if you've got a BIOS which
will boot from whichever disk you tell it to, surely this shouldn't be a
problem?

Any suggestions very welcome,

Thanks,

Chris Lacey.

I am having exactly the same problem, so if someone knows a solution, please
let me know.

Thanks

Sam

Booting LILO off /dev/hdb

Hmmm. . . I had a similar problem.  Something Windows did messed with
the boot sector and killed Lilo-- the result was that I'd get the
dreaded, "LI" and nothing else.  I just made a linux boot disk and
reinstalled Lilo, and it was ok.  It sounds like your problems are a bit
different than mine, but I suppose this might help.

1. lilo won't boot off /dev/sda but will off hda

I have a linux box (K6-2-350, 2940UW, PromisUltra33) 8 ide drives and a
scsi drive. It werks great booting off /dev/hda1 but no go off
/dev/sda1. I have scsi bios pointing to the right scsi ID for boot, bios
is configured to use scsi to boot. AHA bios says that my scsi drive is
"C: (80h)" which is good, i can format the scsi drive w/ MicroSloth and
it boots properly. When I install slakware 3.6 to the scsi drive, all
goes good, except that after i reboot BIOS says MIssing operating sys, i
boot off floppy and point it to "mount root=/dev/sda1" and it will boot
properly off scsi drive. I reinstall the lilo by hand, and it still does
the same thing (missing operating sys), i edit the lilo.conf and it has
"boot = /dev/hda" (the lilo.conf on /dev/sda) then the normal linux boot
section below that. That is the config that wont go. I edit it to say
"boot = /dev/sda" and then it will partly boot, coming up with only "LI"
and sitting there. Also note: MS fdisk only shows me 8 drives, it
truncates the onboard seccondary slave drive. I would guess this is MS
Ignorance but dunno, may be a software-interupt limitation (as in ASM
calls passing the hex drive that they wanna manupulate etc). Also, the
scsi bios loads before the PromisUltra33 bios, so the scsi drive comes
up as 84h (when i'm booting off IDE ofcorse) then the Promis33 loads its
stuff. Also, when booting of /dev/hda1 i can have access to all drives,
including scsi w/ zero problems).

What do u think?
Ideas?

Dave
