Linux, and other UNIX systems, thankfully do not have a serious virus
problem. So, AFAIK, there are no virus checking software available. The
only types of virus that can be written for Linux are trojan-horse type
viruses and if you always login as a normal user, it cannot do any major
harm. Note that, if you use your root account all the time, these
viruses can cause serious problems. So, the important thing is to logon
as a normal user for all day to day activites execpt for system admin
work where you need to be root and when you are logged in as root, run
only trusted binaries. When downloading software from the internet, use
sites which are trustworthy. A lot of software includes the PGP
signature which can verify the identity of the person/group who made the
software available.
