Help this newbie plz ... can't get mandrake setup past "Initializing cd-rom .."

Post by User » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

Hi,
I am attempting to setup mandrake 7.0 and after initializing the cdrom, (just a few
seconds after bootup from the mandrake cdrom), I get a message saying something like
"... install exited abnormally : Signal 11 received ... blah blah ... you can safely reboot .."

This thing happens ALWAYS. Exactly at the SAME point in the installation. It never
gets past this point.  What am I doing wrong ?

My PC:  Cyrix P166+ / 64mb Edo / 4mb ATI 3D Xpression+ video card

Hard-drives:
Disk A:  3.2 G ..... partitioned as 1.6G Fat16 (win98 system) + 1.6G Fat16 (Data files)
Disk B: 4.3 G ... partitioned as
= 96 M Linux Swap (Primary Partition) followed by ..
= 2G Linux Ext2 partition (also Primary Partition) followed by ...
    = Extended partition containing 2 logical Fat32 partitions (1.3G + 0.7G)

This is the first time I am attempting to install linux. I made the partitions using Partition Magic 4.0.
Is there something wrong in the way I partitioned the drive ?

What CD ROM are you using? I got this error on an old 8 speed a
while back. I put in an up to date EIDE 32 speed and all was fine.

This is the latest Ricoh CD-RW 7080a IDE.  No other CD-ROM is in my PC.

Hey,I think you have to disable the plug and play in your bios during
installation for linux to "see" the drive----worked for me.

What sorts of problems did you have?  I had some problems with the
Xconfigurator, but XF86Setup worked just fine.

Try disabling plug-n-play; that might work.  Also -- make sure your CD-ROM
is properly configured (check jumper settings if there are any).

Finally, try moving it to a different IDE channel or select setting; like
setting it to be the Secondary Master (/dev/hdc).  I've noticed a problem
with drives on slave settings if the drives are "wierd", and a CD-RW could
very easily qualify as "wierd". *grin*

1. "mounted cd-rom" and "mounted samba share" icons on KDE 3.1 desktop

I have just installed Mandrake 9.1/KDE 3.1 on my machine. I noticed
that I now have a set of icons coresponding to automounted
directories. For example, I have both a "Mounted CD-ROM" and a
"Mounted Samba (Windows)"-type icon. While I think this is a nice
trick, I would like to remove these icons from my desktop (I prefer
the command line for such things). However, I could not find any way
to achieve this; right-clicking on the icons does not offer a "delete"
choice. I would greatly appreciate if somebody would enlighten me as
to what KDE option or configuration file do I have to modify.

Thank you in advance for all your help.

Gerd
