Problems using a SONY CDU-33A Cdrom with RH 5.1

Post by Christophe LAUE » Tue, 29 Sep 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

I'm trying to install a RH 5.1 distrib on an old 486 with a Sony CDU-33A
cdrom. This distrib works pretty wellion my brand new PII with a 24X
CDROM, but RH kernel doesn't recognize the CDU-33A cdrom.

I've read the CDROM HOWTO, but i cannot figure out to find the correct
values for the requested boot parameters. Can someone tell me a more
detailled information. My 486+CDU33A currently run DOS 6.22 and a
slackware linux.

Thank you, Christophe.

I have the same configuration. The one thing I must do is boot dos first,
loading the cdrom drivers. Then ctrl alt del to  boot linux.

1. Sony CDU-33A with Red Hat 5.1

I am trying to install Red Hat Linux 5.1 on an older Midwest Micro.

System specs:

i486DX processor
12 MB RAM
HDD:  Western Digital 170 MB (master) and Conner Peripherals 430 MB (slave)
CD-ROM:  Sony CDU-33A connected to IDE card on motherboard, not a sound card
Video card:  unknown
Logitech serial mouse
US 101-key keyboard
Soundblaster Value sound card

When I run autoboot.bat from the dosutils directory on the CD, it boots the
kernel fine.  During the install, everything goes OK until I get to the
specify source.  I choose Local CD-ROM.  It won't detect the CD-ROM, so I
choose between SCSI and Other.  Choosing Other, I try the Sony CDU-31A
driver (closest match).  It can't autoprobe the drive.  Under options, I
specify the port address as 340 hex.  I'm not sure of the IRQ.  Has anyone
else had this problem?  What can I do to rectify it and proceed with the
installation?  Many thanks.
