Strange modprobe error messages for net-pf-4/net-pf-5

Post by Microse » Fri, 27 Dec 1996 04:00:00

Hello,
I just got modules working on my machine by installing
modules-2.0.0.tar.gz from sunsite, and am getting a couple of error
messages.  i got the ppp module to work fine for me, but the messages
are troubling me.  can someone please tell me why i get the following
messages on startup (the ones after Going multiuser...)?  i checked
/etc/rc.d/rc.modules and that is not causing the problem.. i execed it
manually to check.  i am enclosing a couple of files below.. thanks.

See the kerneld mini-HOWTO available at your local sunsite LDP mirror,
or http://eolicom.olicom.dk/~storner/kerneld-mini-HOWTO.html

Quick fix: add
   alias net-pf-4 off
   alias net-pf-5 off
to /etc/conf.modules

"The POP3 server service depends on the SMTP server service, which
failed to start because of the following error:
The operation completed successfully." -Windows NT Server v3.51

1. RH5.2: modprobe says cannot find net-pf-4, net-pf-5, etc

That's what it says, during boot... Nothing bas happens, my machine has a
PCI network card.

I have enabled NE2000 support in the kernelk (in module form I believe) -
but why do I get these messages ? I think they go from 1 to 4 or 5...Is it
the network card ?

My machine works standalone now. Is there a way to enable / disbale the net
card when I am standalone ?

Dreaded example: in Win98, I can go to Crtl Panel and say 'disbale device',
and it puts a cross over it. (BTW in Win98 when I do that, if you look at
the net card LED, it stops blinking - goes On continuous - I guess it's
disabled).

Can that be done in Linux ?

Thanks and don't laugh at me pls.
