SONY CDU-55E CDROM??????%#@!!!!!!!!

I'm trying to install Linux from the CUE book. The sony is an atapi ide,
on a seperate controller, set as master. I used the NEC260 boot and root
install thingeys, and on the boot I get the message "NEC260 registered to
major #26." I can't read the messages from the root disk as they go by
way fast. setup then does not find the cdrom. mount doesn't mount,
although i can sometimes get th message ". . . as a read only device.,"
so it appears to mount, but the drive light never comes on for anything,
not even the boot disk. HELPME!!!!!

I can't wait to try to install the soundblaster awe32 to see what
problems it gives me. Is this system really worth all these hassles?
has anyone ever been able to install it smoothly?

1. Sony CDU-55E CDROM Install

HELP!
        I am trying to install my SONY CDU-55E CD Rom Drive under linux
and I am having some strange errors. I am using an EIDE controller and the
CD ROM is installed as the master drive on my secondary controller (possible
problem source? Does it need to be a slave even tho it is the first drive on the
secondary interface?). The drive works great under DOS but I cant get linux to
access it. Here are the messages I get from startup:
(running 1.1.89 Kern and the hdc devices have been created)

And Lastly I noticed that it says multimode disabled on my Hard drives! What
is this? I just noticed it:
