Help with NEC 4x4 EIDE/ATAPI CD-ROM setup

Post by Mattias G. Hembru » Sat, 07 Sep 1996 04:00:00

I just bought a Nec 4x4 CD changer to replace my Mitsumi double spin.
Installation under Dos/Win was quite easy. Since I have a SCSI system, the
CD-ROM is the only device attached to the controller (the one that was
included with the drive).

I THOUGHT the port address was 0x168, but after looking at a couple of
documents, it could very well be 0x1f8 that I just misread. I installed it
with the default settings, both for port as above and IRQ 11.

I'm running 1.2.13 (I know, old - but I don't have the time to upgrade right
now). I reconfigured for EIDE/ATAPI support & recompiled. Then I ran the setup
program from Slackware and tried to scan for an EIDE/ATAPI CD, without
success.

So, after doing some reading, it appears I need to add something like:
hda=cdrom or hda=cyls, heads, sects, wpcom, irq to the LILO config script.

So, which one? And, if the first one doesn't work, what are my values for
cyls, heads, sects, and wpcom?

I would appreciate email, but I will check the newsgroup over the next few
days.

Thank You.

Sorry, small update. I did actually install on IRQ 10, since 11 is my Buslogic
SCSI controller.

Ok. I picked up Infomagic's Sept '96 release last night (but haven't installed
it yet). However, by reading some docs, re-reading my NEC manual and
discovering the discrepancy between the manual and the sticker on the EIDE
card regarding DIP switches, I solved the problem. And, corrected my mistaken
understanding of primary & secondary IDE controllers (have always had SCSI
systems, so I've never had to bother with this).

I set ALL the DIPs to off (0x170, IRQ 15, I believe). Now, my 1.2.13 partition
sees the drive as /dev/hdc.

Thanks to those who gave me input.
