1.2.11 Build problems

1.2.11 Build problems

This is a multiple choice tale of woe. I currently have Linux .98 running
happily running on a Packard Bell 386/25SX with a Revel single speed
CD-ROM. The only problem is XFree86 doesn't seem to like the VGA
controller. Since I didn't NEED X, I have had that running for about a
year.

I need to start accepting a news feed, so I put a Maxtor 1.28G drive in my
Compaq Presario CDS 833, added 8 more meg of memory, and started what I
thought would be a easy transition to a newer faster Linux.

I new that my original Linux wouldn't work on the Compaq because I'd tried
it in the past. I decided the LinuxWare 1.0 I got a while back from
Transamerica would be the best bet, so I loaded that and attempted to
install from the CD via their Windows interface. It wouldn't let me load
to the nice Linux partition I'd set up. So I went with the suppliment 3
(April 1995) and attempted to do it the old fashioned way. No Go. I
couldn't get it to recognize the CD attached to the SoundBlaster 16 (and
I'll be damned it I'll copy all that stuff to floppy).

SOOO I'm at the bookstore and I see this nice "Linux Universe". I created
a boot  floppy (1.2.1), and got partitions set up, and with lot of
tinkering finally got the CD ready for an install. I got everything
installed, even got X working, and thought I was home free. NOPE.

First, I can get to my local net via TCP/IP, but nothing outside my
domain. I've looked at the CONFIG and can see nothing different than my
other machine which is working fine. the XADMIN is nice, but it left out
the NETWORK parameter which a added manually. Still no go. Decided to
print out a newer version of the Network Guide.

BUMMER. The printer doesn't work. Can't even CAT > /dev/lp0. Says "device
doesnt exist".

Rebuild the kernel making sure parallel support in enabled. Get a boot
error, saying something about "status 6". Also, can't find module 3C509,
but I can use TCP local, but still nothing outside the subnet.

Attempt to rebuild modules (make modules). Numerous errors, no joy.

OK. Back to Transamerica. Fiddle fiddle. Still no CD. Bummer.

FTP'd 1.2.11 from sunsite to my other Linux machine, FTP'd it local to the
Compaq and attempted a build. No Joy. Somethings missing, since I get
pages of errors. Remove everything. Re GZIP, remake config with fewer
selections (no sound this time), make dep, make clean, make zlilo, same
batch of errors, Undefined references to "sys_call_table" and
"floppy_track_buffer".

I'm stumped. I need to get the printer working, and a have to have FTP
working outside of the SUBNET. I feel the Transamerica is newer, but I
can't get the CD working to install. I do like the xadmin application in
Linux Universe, but I'm not sure it's not in the way of my current
problems.

I used: "aha152x=0x340,11,5,1,0,0 reserve=220,20,300,20" to get Linux
Universe to boot the CD.

My Configuration:

Compaq Presario CDS 833
486/33SX
16MB RAM/1.28GB Maxtor (3 partitions, first is DOS)
Soundblaster 16 (0x220 IRQ5 DMA1, Midi 0x330, DMA6)
SB SCSI (Adaptec 152x) 0x340, IRQ 11, DMA 5, ID 5
FAX (Intel Satisfaction 400) 0x310 IRQ 7, Modem COM2 IRQ3
Farallon EtherWave 0x210 IRQ 10

1. openldap 1.2.11 build problem

I'm trying to get openldap-1.2.11 to make it through the build process. When
I do a "make" it refuses to make the slapd server totally scipping it before
it completes. I've compiled the Berkeley DB backend and installed it in
/usr/local/BerkeleyDB.3.2. It seemed to compile successfully but Openldap
won't. I'm using Redhat 7.0. The Openldap and Openldap-devel packages are
installed from the RPM's of Redhat 7.0. Their tied in to PHP 4 and Sendmail
I can't uninstall them for fear of breaking a dependency. So I'm trying to
compile the tar files from Openldap.org.  Here's the section that bombed.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
