SLAKWARE ConfigFX86 ????

Post by David Vic Bak » Fri, 30 Jun 1995 04:00:00

I'm desperately trying to install Slakware on my home pc.  I can't locate the
file ConfigFX86 that the author talks about.  I've followed the directions
given in the book, Linux Unleashed, but to no good end.  I have the CD that
came with the book as well.  I've installed disk sets X, XAP, X..., anything
that is X related and no file ConfigFX86.  Anybody have a similar problem?
I chose my server as FX86_S3 for my S3 video card.  Thanks in advance!

I had the same problem. Ended up reading everything and building the
ConfigXF86 file by hand.

Next day, I found xf86config. It's in /usr/bin I think. Someone shoot
the proof-reader(s) :-)

Actually, I think what is happening is that the documentation is still set
up for X11R5 and earlier.  They apparently changed the dang thing when they
went to X11R6.  I haven't yet found ANY documentation, even in the public
book stores that refer specifically to X11R6 or to any version of LINUX
itself later than 2.2.0.

If you want a book that includes X11R6, then that is the one that the
book I bought says is current. The book is

        Running Linux - Matt Welsh and Lar Kaufman
        O'Reilly & Associates, Inc.
        ISBN - 1-56592-100-3

I have only read some of it so far... but it seems good to me as a very
new user of Linux.

p.s. On the distribution of Linux that I have (Linux-FT), the
configuration program is ConfigXF86. Not sure where it is located, it
does a good job of finding it for me, and I have not had enough
time, or knowledge to go looking for files that I have not needed to find
8-)

  Alan Wood             I have mastered the programming,
 ~~~~~~~~~~~            now to get the programs working.
I had the same problem.  I even reinstalled thinking I had missed it
somewhere.  You can pretty much live without the utility - from what I
could surmise it just helps you setup your XF86Config file.  You can
start (assuming you have the same version of Slackware as I do) by
copying the file in /usr/X11/lib/X11/XF86Config.eg to XF86Config.
Then you will need to go into this file and modify the monitor/video
card sections (these sections are pretty well documented within the
file.)  I have an S3 card also and was able to get the information I
needed from the README.S3 file in the /doc subdirectory.  By doing
this I was able to get OpenWindows up and running.  Hope this gets you
going.  If you get stuck and have more specific questions feel free to
post a follow-up.
good luck,
M.K. Jones
I have this book as well and it is full of examples where it is
totally wrong. For example is confuses the Linux native and Linux Swap
types for disk partitions and similar stuff. It would appear to have
been written by someone who has never used the software distributed
with the book.
The file you are looking for is not called configXF86!! That's the
main problem. It is called /usr/X386/bin/xf86config but I'm sure that
you'd of guessed that anyhow.
The Linux Unleashed book is NOT for beginners, despite that fact that
it might give that impression. I have had considerable UNIX experience
in the past and I'm finding the installation a struggle, you certainly
have to think hard and while the book provides guidelines it's not
step by step.
Regards,
Philip Blair.
