SCSI tape drive trouble

Post by Ralf D. Werne » Tue, 26 Jan 1999 04:00:00

Hello,

I have some trouble with my travan tape SEAGATE (CONNER) CTT8000-S and a HP
DAT drive - HP35480A. I wonder, whether there's a tool for adjusting the
ioctl parameters according to these two tape drives - here's the trouble
that I experience:

I want to do a cyclic backup of my NT and 95 machines and installed a NFS
server on this PCs. Now I'm changing directory to one of the mounted drives
and issue the command:

 tar cvf /dev/travan . --use-compress-program bzip2

(or /dev/dat - these are links to the /dev/st0 and /dev/st1)

Sometimes the tar stops after 10 seconds with an I/O error - sometimes the
stop occurs after 5 minutes. HELP! I don't know if I should throw out the
tape drives - or if fine tuning with some parameters could help.

If you reply by mail, please remove the "nospam." in my email address.

Cheers,

Ralf

At the time of the I/O error, look in your /var/log/messages file for any
interesting messages.
