Adding Swap: 257000k swap-space (priority -1)

Hi:-

I have been trying to install RH 8.0 and now 7.3 on a dedicated 6.1 GB Hard
Disk and I keep having the same problem in which it seems to be formatting
'Forever' and never complete the task.

In checking the log (Ctrl+Alt+F3) the las 5 lines are: "hda1 is a protected
partition"

In checking the log (Ctrl+Alt+F4) the last line is: "Adding Swap: 257000K
swap-space (priority -1)"

In checking the log (Ctrl+Alt+F5) the last line is: "Writing inode tables:
6/48" and it is stuck there"

In checking the normal screen (Ctrl+Alt+F1) ===> The "Formatting" box is
stuck at 12% and doe not seem to be going anywhere anytime soon...

I have spent countless hours in trying to install and read everything I can
on the subject whithout success...

I would really appreciate if anyone could hep me/tell me what is my
problem...

Thanks!

Gaetan

It looks to me that you have a dude disk or problem with the controller.

David:-

Well after I got so fed up I was able to completely install an old 5.2 and
it formatted the disk correctly...so I thought I would upgrade to to 8.0 or
7.3 and again both of these got stuck at the same place with the same
messages.

1. Adding swap space using 'swap -a' command ?

Greetings,

I am using SCO OpenServer 5.0.4 on a compaq prolian 4500 server. The
initial swap space setup is too small. I want to increase the swap
space.

I first create a directory say '/hotswap' and inside the hotswap
directory, I created a empty file called 'swapfile2'. I then make the
file swapfile2 act as a swap space
using :
              swap -a /hotswap/swapfile2 65536

When I used 'swap -l' to list the current swap space, it appears to have
added to the system. But when I check the system disk space, it appear
to be the same as before the swap file is added to the system.

path                                        swaplo    block        free
block
=========================================
/dev/swap                  1,41            0        196668      186790
/hotswap/swapfile2     76,1            0        65536        65536

Can someone tell if I done it correctly?  If not, how should I do it ?

Thank in advance
