I can't mount my cdrom drive

I can't mount my cdrom drive

Post by Troy Bayli » Tue, 10 Feb 1998 04:00:00

G'day all,

Thanks to Perry Grieb for replying to my last post, unfortunatley
the problem still persists, i changed jumpers on my cdrom (atapi IDE drive)
to make it a secondary master, but now when linux boots it says hdc not
detected' instead of hdd before.
Anyway this is what happens if i do the following:

                   % mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
        returns:
mount: the kernel does not recognise /dev/cdrom as a
block
                    device (maybe 'insmod driver'?)

         and    % mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom
        returns the same message.

I don't even know if i am using the correct arguments for these commands
Does this mean i need to install drivers or something? i did the install
straight of the infomagic cd pack and i did a full install. (i installed
straight from cd also btw)

Please enlighten me,
                      thanks in advance

This may sound like a stupid question, but is your kernel compiled with CDROM
support ?  In addtion:  /dev/cdrom is almost *always* a link to the actuall
device.
In my case, /dev/cdrom is a link pointing to /dev/hdc.  Make sure that the
/dev/cdrom actually exists in the /dev directory!!  If it doesn't you wont be
mounting
anything!!  In addtion:  does the mount point exist ?  That is, is there a
directory
called /mnt/cdrom ?  Your target (mount point) must also exist!!  This is a
trivial
point since you would probably have seen the error
"mount point /mnt/cdrom does not exist" if it wasn't there already.

Hope some of this helps,

1. mount error: mount only root can mount /dev/cdrom on cdrom

"That should do it.  I hope this was not to long an explaination, but
"I want you to have a fell for what you are doing before doing it.

"Now as to why...
"Most multitasking multiuser Operation system do not let users
"access the mount command.  Linux makes it possible for users
"to use the command, but doesn't give the privilage to automatically.
"Root has to set the priv on a per device basis.

... oh wow.  that was great.  thanks ...
