Desktop problem

Post by Ben Boerstoe » Tue, 22 Jan 2002 07:14:29

Hi,

I've just installed Linux for the very first time! Everything seems to be
working fine, except for one thing: some programs, such as Konqueror,
''destroy'' the desktop (that is, it looks awful after starting such an
application, as if someone painted the desktop randomly).
What could be the cause of this problem?

Here's some more information:

- Linux distribution is mandrake 8.1
- Sis 620 Graph. card, 8 Mb VRam
- Intel Celeron 600Mhz processor
- 64Mb RAM

Thanks in advance,

Ben

It's been my experience that Linux in general -- and Mandrake in
particular -- don't like SiS graphics chips. I had a world of difficulty
on a PC Chips board awhile back, and had to run the old Xfree86 drivers
(3.3.4). I haven't been able to identify what specifically is wrong, just
that the support for them is really poor in Linux. Same with S3 and
Trident chips, especially if the actual card manufacturer is not a major
company. It might be worth it to set up X for the older version.
