route: netmask doesn't match route address

when I run the /etc/rc.d/init.d/network start command I get a message
saying "route: netmask doesn't match route address" and then some lines
on Usage.

can anyone help me with this?

your network info is actually read from /etc/sysconfig/network (for
RH5.x).  verify the info in this file first (its probably just a bunch a
variable settings).  somewhere in the beginning of init.d/network
/etc/sysconfig/network is sourced and then configuration begins based on
what's in that file.

we'll prob'ly need more info on your system's config to really say for
sure whats wrong.  are you configuring an ip for you machine?  is your
machine multi-homed?

take a look at the output your routing tables using either "netstat -rn"
or "route -F".  can you manually add routes using "route add xx asja
jdsa"?

lastly, if using subnetting, your subnet must begin w/ all 1's.  ie:
255.255.255.0.   255.0.255.0 is _not_ a valid mask.  and see what line
actually calls "route" in init.d/network and see what it's args are.
