20+ meg Swap partition setup, but top only reports 860k of swap available...

Hi,
        I appreciate your time.  I am running slackware96, and setup a 23
meg swap partition during installation, set the type to linux swap, and
the swap partition is in fstab.  kswapd(sp?) runs during boot up, and everything
seems fine.  yet, 'top' only reports 860k of swap available, to go along with
16megs of RAM.  There should be 20+ megs of swap available..  After
running a web browser and 2 ftp sessions in X,  X died with a message about
not enough memory....
Is there something I need to do with slackware different than redhat
to get the system to see all of the swap partition?  This is an 850meg IDE
Conner Periphials (sp?) HD...

Thanks!!

Unless things have changed with kernel version 2.0 (I haven't checked)
Your swap partition can't be larger than 16megs, although you can have
more than one 16meg partition.

What? Where did you get that notion? Does 128 meg. ring a bell?

That changed _ages_ ago, before 1.2.something I think.  Current limit is
about 128M
