Upgrade problem: RedHat 4.2 -> 5.0

Upgrade problem: RedHat 4.2 -> 5.0

Post by Chris E Fore » Tue, 02 Jun 1998 04:00:00

Hi, I have been using a RedHat 4.2 system and wanted to upgrade to
RH 5.0 from a set of CDs.  After my original install disks failed (reason
unknown), I created new boot.img disks and was able to start the RH
installer.

When I tried this, the installer asks for Install or Upgrade, at which
point, I selected Upgrade.  Then, the install failed because it could
not find the previous database of installed packages.

Is there a way to get around this by creating a new database or
must I reinstall everything again?   I looked at the rpm manpage but
that really doesn't help much. Are there other sources of info on the web?

Thanks for any help or info.

Chris

To rebuild the rpm database do a

        rpm --rebuilddb

man rpm will give all the options for rpm.

1. socket error problem after upgrading from RH 4.2 -> 5.0

Help!

We upgraded one of our systems from RedHat 4.2 to 5.0 and started having
problems with a couple of the network systems.

1) when logging in as root the error below appears

in.telnetd: getpeername: Socket operation on non-socket
[1]+ Exit 1     in.telnetd

2) In the startup of the netatalk system there is a failure with
starting sockets in the module atalkd

socket: Invalid argument

-------------------

We upgraded another of our systems from RedHat 4.2 to 5.0 and had no
problems at all. The difference between them is that the one that fails
also does masquerading too.

We've tried upgrading 5.0 a couple of times hoping that something didn't
get installed. That didn't work. We want to avoid installing RH 5 fresh
because that may take our system down for several days.

one additional bit is that the kernel was upgraded to v2.0.33 under RH
4.2 and RH 5.0 installs a kernel at v2.0.32.

Thanks,
-Mark
