tar'ing to a NT based 4mm SCSI dat via samba?

Post by Peter Esp » Sat, 19 Jun 1999 04:00:00

I have a NT box and a redhat 5.2 box on a fast ethernet
network and am already sharing filesystems via samba.  I
have a 4mm DAT on the Windows NT system via an Adaptec
2940 SCSI interface.

Is there a way for me to tar and dump on linux to the
4mm dat on the NT system?

Thanks.

You could have the NT backup the samba server as a network drive.

Thanks, but I am especially looking for a way to tar to the NT
tape drive, if possible.

tar'ing to a NT based 4mm SCSI dat via samba?

If it's an external drive, I've heard of SCSI sharing switches.
Don't know the details.

CutNPaste or Click this :

If it's not external, make it one.

How about using a DOS version of tar.  I would think you should be able to
mount the samba shares that you want to back up and then tar the stuff to
your NT tape drive just as you would on a unix box.  Actually you shouldn't
even need to mount the shares.

1. TAR'ing to a DAT mounted on SGI

I have a HP35480A DAT drive mounted on one of the SGI's in the office. I
can tar to an from this device ok (using tar cf qe8:/dev/tape *....etc) on
any other of the SGI machines but not from my linux box.

When I try a, tar tf qe8:/dev/tape, for instance on the linux box I get :
tar : read error on qe8:/dev/tape : I/O error

I know that the device setup on the SGI is not the best (ie fixed block
size to write and variable blocksize to read !!) but it works.

What can I do to tar to and from my linux box???

Thanks for your help.

Regards,
P.
