Netscape crashes under linux when loading a web page containing Java applet

Post by enguerrand.g.. » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

Hi,

I have a RedHat6.0 installed on my laptop as well as the apache HTTP
server (configured only for loopback).
When I load an HTML page on the netscape browser (either 4.51 or 4.7),
everything works fine but if the HTML contains a Java Applet, Netscape
browser crashes and a message "Bus Error" appears in the Shell.

Does someone knows why it is doing that and if there is a solution ?
Or if there is another web browser that works fine under linux ?...

Thanks,
   E.G.

As an alternative, you might try the browser built into Star Office
5.1a.  Sun, the creators of Java, have tuned it to work quite well with
most Java language.  It's not perfect, but I've never had it crash of
lock up.  At worst, it simply tells me some particular action is
incompatible with Linux.

There's a site on the web about Netscape workarounds.  It has to
do with shared libraries and Netscape memory leaks or something.
I tried it and it helps a bit.  I'm not in Linux now(it's on another
machine) to get your the URL but a web search should pick it
up or check for a Netscape HOWTO.

Also there's a Netscape news server
secnews.netscape.com with hundreds of ngs

The first one is a biggie. It will fix a lot of java crashes.
