powerd with APC Back-UPS Pro?

powerd with APC Back-UPS Pro?

Post by Slav Inge » Tue, 30 Dec 1997 04:00:00

Hello,

I was just wondering whether anyone had similar problems to those I'm
experiencing now...  I have an APC BackUPS-Pro, and I'm trying to get
powerd to recognize the UPS.  The UPS is on COM1 and modem on COM2 in
DOS/Win95, but in Linux my modem is on /dev/cua0 (I'd think it should be
on /dev/cua1, but it works...), and UPS is NOT on any existing ports.  I
went through all ports I had with the powerd, but to no avail.
setserial reports the correct values for all serial ports.  I tried
using other power daemons, but they do not report errors, while powerd
at least puts the line "UPS connection failed" into /var/log/messages.
I'm using RedHat 4.2 (2.0.30), with modular serial support.  The kernel
automatically inserts the correct serial module.  Does anyone know
whether generic powerd works with APCs?  One of the previous power
daemons (apcupsd) put a symbolic link apcupsd->/dev/ttyS0, but it
doesn't work on that port either.

Thanks.

Happy Holidays!

why use the generic powerd?  just use apcupsd ...  (works nicely on my Smart
UPS & SUVS ...  8) )

1. UPS Woes (APC Back-UPS Pro)

Does anyone have an APC UPS working properly with Linux?  I've been using
Tom Webster's Genpowerd, trying to figure out which serial lines do what.
APC is less than helpful, and I'd rather not sign a NDA and fork over $50,
just so I can make my UPS do what it was supposed to do in the first
place.

Has anyone had any luck, either with Genpowerd or Miguel's Powerd?  I'd
like to use either the Win95 cable or the NT cable, which shipped with the
UPS, rather than build my own (though I could build one if I had clear,
definite plans and assurance that it works).

Also, can anyone explain to me the difference between "smart" and "simple"
signaling modes, and how the UPS knows which mode to use?

My UPS is a Back-UPS Pro 280 (plug-and-pray).  Thanks for any hints anyone
can share with me.
