svga virtual resolution

Hi all,

In an effort to get more video memory into an old Dell Optiplex, I bought
Dell's STB NVidia card with 16mb.  My problem is getting 1024 x 768
virtual resolution with the svga driver, as I used to do with my old
accel driver. Here is the relevant part of the XF86Config file:

# The Colour SVGA server

 Section "Screen"
    Driver      "svga"
    # Use Device "Generic VGA" for Standard VGA 320x200x256
    #Device      "Generic VGA"
    Device      "My Video Card"
    Monitor     "Samsung SyncMaster 3"
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth       32
        Modes       "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768"
        Virtual     1024 768
        ViewPort    1 1
    EndSubsection
 EndSection

I get the same results regardless of whether the "Virtual" line is present
or absent, i.e. a screen that shows part of the desktop.  It is possible
to pan around the desktop, so everything can be reached, but I prefer to
see the whole thing at one time.  A very similar Display subsection used
to work just fine for my S3 card using the accel server.

How can I get a virtual resolution of 1024x768, so I can see the whole
desktop with my current hardware?

I'll appreciate any help I can get.  Many thanks in advance.

Tom

I'm surprised, unless the Modes line was dissimilar ...

The first mode in the Modes line is the default one for startup. Change
your Modes line above to be:

  Modes "1024x768" "640x480" "800x600"

... or something like that. Alternatively, you could use Ctrl-Alt-Num+
and Ctrl-Alt-Num- to change resolution, but I admit that that's a pain.

svga virtual resolution

Hi all,

I wanted some extra video memory for my old Dell Optiplex computer, so
bought an STB NVidia card with 16mb from Dell.  I'm having trouble getting
it to display the entire desktop at one time.  The following Screen
section of XF86Config is very similar to the one I used to use with my S3
and the accel server, but doesn't work with the svga server and my new
card.

Can anyone point out what is wrong?  I'm expecting a virtual resolution of
1024x768 so the whole desktop shows, but I get the same results regardless
of whether the Virtual 1024 768 line is present or absent.  I can pan to
the off-screen portion of the desktop, but don't find this convenient.

Thanks in advance for any help you might offer.

1. svga virtual resolution

Hi all,

I posted this query 2 weeks ago, then was called away before I got any
responses.  Apologies to those who took time to answer.

I have a new NVidia video card for my old Dell Optiplex and can't get it
to show the full desktop.  I am trying a screen configuration very similar
to the one I used for my old S3 video card, but the svga driver doesn't
seem to act on the "Virtual" line.  The screen is a window onto the
desktop and I have to pan around to see the offscreen parts.

The configuration follows.  Can someone point me to a solution?  I'd like
to see the whole desktop.

# The Colour SVGA server

 Section "Screen"
    Driver      "svga"
    # Use Device "Generic VGA" for Standard VGA 320x200x256
    #Device      "Generic VGA"
    Device      "My Video Card"
    Monitor     "Samsung SyncMaster 3"
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth       32
        Modes       "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768"
        Virtual     1024 768
        ViewPort    1 1
    EndSubsection
 EndSection

Many thanks in advance,

Tom
