RHL 5.1 on Sparc and Netscape

RHL 5.1 on Sparc and Netscape

Post by Stephen M. Pereir » Sun, 15 Nov 1998 04:00:00

Hello all,

I have recently loaded RHL 5.1 successfully on my Sparc Classic at
home.  I also have successfully gotten PPP set up and working.  Then I
went looking for Netscape, and when I had trouble finding it, I posted
to Usenet, but no response.  I later saw a posting and I was able to
download the Netscape tar file from the unix/unsupported area.

Now for my problem.  I ungzipped the file and then untarred the contents
into my /usr/local area fine.  Then I invoked ns-install and it seemed
to go OK as well.  Of course, when I invoke netscape, my disk chugs a
bit and then I get the message that netscape aborted and dumped core.

I read the README file and it says I should download a new glibc RPM
package.  Sigh, OK, I thought, and I tried to invoke glint to check out
how the package manager works, only to find that it also bombs out with
two or three error messages about python!

Has anyone been able to get netscape navigator working?  Can you tell me
how many packages I must download to get RHL 5.1 fixed up?

I am posting this to Usenet, but I do not expect a great response, as I
have never received one yet when I've posted a question about Sparc
Linux.

Please help if you can,
smp

I don't think there are many people running Linux of any description on
SPARC. I've currently got RedHat 4.2 and I'm hoping to install 5.1 this
year.
Have you checked the errata list on the RedHat website. This should list
any known bugs in the SPARC distribution? You could also try running the
SunOS binary. The IBCS module is supposed to allow binaries compiled for
other OS to run under Linux? Am I stating the obvious? :)

Does anyone know what's going on?

1. Browser for Sparc w/ RHL 5.1 ?

Hello all,

Well, now that I have RHL 5.1 loaded on my Sparc Classic at home, *and*
I have PPP up and running with my ISP, I now turn my attention to that
all important issue:  where do I obtain a browser for this puppy?

It appears that Netscape has versions for x86 Linux or Sparc Sun OS or
Sparc Solaris, but *not* Sparc Linux.

Can anyone point me to a place where I might obtain a reasonable web
browser which works with Linux on a Sparc platform?  I have heard rumors
that Netscape compiled as a Sun OS 4.x binary will work on RHL - can
anyone verify?

I am just getting into Linux, so I am a newbie at compiling, linking,
loading and the like.  Please assist if you can.

Thanks in advance,
smp
