Can't login using yp/nis !

Post by Harry M. Fuc » Thu, 27 Nov 1997 04:00:00

although following instructions in NIS-HOWTO and reading all FAQ's i could
find, i'm still not able to login to my linux machines using

        ypserv-1.2.5
        ypbind-3.3
        yp-tools-1.2

the funny thing is, i can do 'ypcat passwd' and even change users passwords
with yppasswd ... but a normal user isn't able to login! might there be a
problem with these packages in conjunction with the shadow password system?
i only found hints, that it isn't that easy ...

i got 4 linux machines, one is running as the master, the 3 others as
slaves. this part works. the 4 communicate and exchange datas ...

the master is running ypserv and yppasswdd, the three others ypserv and
ypbind.

what could be wrong? why can i change my password as a user (when su'ing
from root) but not login ?

thanx in advance for any hints,

        Harry

There is a mistake in the NIS-HOWTO. The last line in /etc/passwd should
look
like this:

+::::::

If you use the suggested form with an entry in the second field like

+:*:::::

as it is mentioned in the HOWTO all logins via NIS would be denied,

Dirk

1. NIS,yp, can't login

Howdy -

At work I'm trying to set up my Linux PC (RH7.1) as an NIS client to allow
me to login using my account on the NIS server (and hopefully get
automount working to mount my home dir).  yp/nisdomainname, ypbind,
etc. are all set up on my PC according to a how-to (forgot which).  I can
run rpcinfo* and get results just as the how-to claims I should.  I can
mount my NIS home dir no problem (all this done as root on my PC).  But I
can't log on to my NIS-land user acct.  Everytime I do I get an error
stating "Unknown user" (or something to that effect).  I'm pretty sure I
tried adding +::::: to my PC's /etc/passwd.  Do I need more than just
blank fields?  Does the admin have to do something more?  On my PC I can
do 'yppasswd | grep <acct>' and see my account exists in NIS-land.  Can
someone tell me what I'm missing so that I can log on?

Thanks...

Mike
