Adding Linux to a Windows95/NT machine

Adding Linux to a Windows95/NT machine

Post by Robert Faus » Fri, 10 Oct 1997 04:00:00

I am about to add Linux to a dual boot system that has 95&NT.  What is
the best (easiest) way to accomplish this?  Do I add Linux to the NT
loader or boot LILO and then the NT loader?

I used to be able to have the tri-boot process as well.  First, lilo,
then NT-OS-loader.  But, after changing the hard drive (it was making
unhappy noises) I am unable to put lilo on, and still boot NT.  I used
the same sequence of installs as the original, even.

I found a utility called "bootpart" and it claims to be able to make NT
boot linux...if-when I get it to work, I may post the URL.

Till then...

Quoting from the "NT OS loader + Linux mini-HOWTO":

   4.  Bootpart

There is a NT-programm called bootpart written by G. Vollant that can
do the jobs from the next two points for you. Bootpart is available at
   http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/gvollant/bootpart.htm.

See <http://sunsite.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/mini/Linux+NT-Loader>.

1. Adding NT and 95 to linux machine via new HD

I am running a pent pro with linux slack 3.0 k1.2.13. I use1.4Gb for linux
and 200M for dos form one 1.6Gb drive (IDE). I want to play with
NT and 95, just to get to know them for the future when I switch all the
goons^H^H^H^H I mean users here from 3.11 on Novell to 95, or maybe
even to chuck novel and use  NTserver.

I have an old 200M IDE drive want to install for this purpose. I assume I
can lob 95 onto my existing 200M partition no problems? Is it launched
witha
win95 command, or does it use a boot loader?

For NT, I assume I install the HD as an extended partition and make the
whole
200M a logical partion (say D), and load NT onto that. Now, do I HAVE
to use the NT bootloader, or can I launch that from DOS. The NT manuals
don't mention this capability. Note, I launch linux with loadlin, hence
the need
to get to the regular config.sys menu system.
