Running RH51 Sndconfig problem

Running RH51 Sndconfig problem

Post by Rhin » Sun, 15 Nov 1998 04:00:00

Hey everyone,
I have had a horrible time trying to get my sound to work with Red Hat
Linux 5.1.  I have just reinstalled linux again because I thought maybe
that I deleted something or did something wrong which caused this but I
was wrong.  The problem is that I have no sound and when I try to run
Red Hat's sndconfig thing I don't even get a screen, I just get
segmentation fault, core dumped.  Does anyone know what this means or
what a potential problem could be.

BTW I have an Ensoniq Audio PCI sound card if that helps.  Thanks

sndconfig won't help. This utility is used for configuring SoundBlaster
and 100% compatible cards. Even if your card claims to be SB compatible
under DOS, it doesn't mean the same for linux. If your card is SB compatible,
(I guess it's not) you can find out reading
/usr/src/linux/drivers/sound/Readme.cards
and other README files from that directory.
(You've got to have kernel sources installed, or you won't find much there)
If you are lucky and your card is supported, you'll have to recompile
kernel with your card support enabled. If you won't find any information
on your card, try http://www.se.opensound.com/linux.html

1. sndconfig prob RH51 -- results in no sound under linux

For the past few months I have working on this problem on and off.
I have no sound when running linux.  The cd play doesn't work and I also
installed an mp3 player and that does not work either.

I have an intel 233mhz computer running red hat 5.1.  When I run sndconfig
command all I get is segmentation fault (core dumped).  Does anyone know what
this means or why it wouldn't be even recognizing my sound card.

The type of card I have is an Ensoniq Audio PCI from Gateway.  Someone said to
me that I may have to change my bios settings because it's a p-n-p card.  Is
this so and if so what would I change them to?

Any information regarding any part of this would be greatly helpful.  Even a
url where I could read it on my own would be great, because I can figure it out
from stuff like that, but I don't know what I'm doing without it.  Email can be

help that you can provide,
