Mouse Problem: Logitech Mouse Button 2

Mouse Problem: Logitech Mouse Button 2

Post by J Kidwe » Fri, 12 Jun 1998 04:00:00

I am having problems getting mouse button 2 to be recognized. I am using
a Logitech Mouseman. It's a bus mouse but also has a serial adapter.

If I use the serial adapter and set it up appropriately with Mouseconfig,
it works both with GPM and in Xwindows, with one exception - no middle
button in Xwindows. The middle button will not paste, a Ctrl-MB2 will give the
same menu under Xterm as Ctrl-MB1... So there is some response, just not the
correct response.

I *can* use the middle button to paste with GPM.

If I configure it as a PS/2 mouse, everything works with GPM. Under
X however, any move sends the cursor to the upper right corner. Though
it randomly moves back and forth on the top line, I can't move it
anywhere else.

I've tried this after killing GPM - same behavior. I've edited XF86Config
in /etc/X11 and changed the /dev/mouse to /dev/psaux  - same behavior.

Any ideas?
                                       Thanks,
                                                John Kidwell

What's ``appropriate''? What settings did you use?  Most of the new
logitech mice use `mouseman' protocol.

Mouse Problem: Logitech Mouse Button 2

Yes, it was using the Mouseman settings. I have been playing with it today
and found I can conditionally get it to work...

I used mouseconfig and set it up "inappropiately" (choosing Logitech Bus
Mouse), when I use startx, naturally it bombs. I then reset it to Mouseman
connected to /dev/cua0. When I use startx this time the middle button works.
If I exit X-Windows and reenter startx - the middle button no longer works.

I can shortcut this by just typing mouseconfig --kickstart before I startx.
Each time, this is good for only the subsequent startup of X-Windows.

So I guess I need to understand exactly what happens when mouseconfig runs.
Is there a file that is altered? Would that be /etc/X11/XF86Config?

1. Using Logitech 3 button mouse, as a Logitech 3 button mouse.

Subject says it all,  after weeks of pain, grief, frustration, hating
everybody who kept telling me that Logitech mice work fine with 0.96bp2.
I finally got my Logitech Mouseman (3 buttons) to work.  Simply by
uncommenting the line in Xconfig for a Microsoft mouse. (Thank you whoever
posted this little snippet of advice, if only I had known).  However, I have
a 3 BUTTON mouse and would really like to use it as such.  Does anybody have
  ^^^^^^^^
a Mouseman working with 3 buttons.  Please, please tell me if you do.

Thanks (I hope) in advance,

Scott.
