Power off at shutdown

Power off at shutdown

Post by Julian Rus » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

Hi

I've installed RedHat 6.0 - with KDE, and getting to grips with it...
but every time I shutdown, the machine doesn't power down.  I get a
message 'Powerdown' as the last item on the screen, but the machine
doesn't turn off.

It's a relatively recent Supermicro motherboard with American Megatrends
BIOS (with
ACPI); with Win98 the PC powers down automatically on shutdown.  Can
Linux do the same - if so, what should I do to make it do it?  I run
Linux from a boot disk, for the moment, though shortly moving to use
loadlin.

It's getting to be a pain to reboot, start Win98 and then shutdown
again. :-(

What???
Just press the power button again to shut it off (you might have to hold
it for 3 seconds)

You can also recompile the kernel and add that support.

I don't know offhand wether or not linux supports soft power off;  but
you don't need to boot win98 to do this - just shut off the power
switch!  Note some machines combine the reset and on-off functions in
one switch - just hold it for about 4 seconds to turn it off.

You do know tht you can just press the power switch at that point-- ie
switch it off manually?
I do not know if Linux supports powerdown on those few new motherboards
which support it.

Of course Linux supports powerdown.  You have to make sue it is compiled in the
kernel.

Buried at the bottom of the chain right now should be the answer you want.
I had the
same problems with RH6.0 until I realized that they didn't have power off
on shutdown
compiled into their kernel.  A quick kernel re-compile should solve your
problems.

Hmm, this puzzles me. I have the following scenario with RH6.0:

* First, I install it on a fairly modern machine (Compaq 450 MHz Intel
Pentium II, 440 BX chipset). The poweroff works as it should.

* Then I install it on an old 486 - the poweroff does not work,
message in log says, like you point out, no apm support in kernel.

* During the installation (using boot disc for NFS install) it did
powerdown properly. (I went for a beer ;-)

So the install kernel on the boot diskette supports apm but not the
installed kernel? Ok, but why does it work on the compaq. I did install
less stuff on the 486, is the support in a module?

Anyone out there that can spread some light over this?

Thanks

1. RH 7.2 Power Management, power-off on shutdown?

Hi,

I  am using  an SMP  machine  (Tyan 1836  dual uprocessors).  Previous
versions of  RH allowed me  to power-off the machine  during shutdown,
but  I  am  not  able  to  shutoff the  power  using  RH  7.2.   Tried
recompiling the kernel,  etc.  Has anyone gotten power-off  to work on
an SMP?  I would love some suggestions.

Thanks,

marc
