getting rshd to run in Linux. please help

Post by Matthew Hixs » Mon, 17 Jun 1996 04:00:00

Hello,
I am having a hard time getting rsh and rshd to work under linux.
My roommate and I have our two PCs networked with ethernet cards, and
both have linux on our computers.  I would like to have the ability to
execute commands from one computer to another using the command rsh.
However, I cannot seem to get it to work.
In my /etc/hosts.equiv file I put both of our IP addresses, and
hostnames.
In /etc/hosts.allow I have ALL:ALL.
I do not have any entries in /etc/hosts.deny.
I uncommented the exec line from /etc/inetd.conf.
I even tried adding '++' to my .rhosts file.  This still produced
"Permission denied."
I added /usr/sbin/in.rshd to my /etc/rc.d/rc.inet2 file.
I have manually attepted running in.rshd and even have renamed it to
rshd, but neither works.  It seems to run, but then quits right away,
because I cannot find it on my list of processes.
I manually started up rwhod to see if that one works, and it remained
in my process list until I killed it.

If you have any other ideas or remedies I would appreciate hearing
them.  This is driving me nuts. Please reply via email.
  Thanks in advance,

I found rsh (d) to be very picky about what was in ~/.rhosts or
/etc/hosts.equiv. It had to match the first name on the line in
/etc/hosts, ie the FQHN. Aliases didn't work.

        Try reading:
        http://beyond.malmo.lth.se/~gps/Raven/SSR03/ssr03-11.html#ss11.1
(sorry this bookmark is going to change soon, but you should be able
        to hack that).

        11.1 /home/gps/.rhosts

        # this is pigeon:/home/gps/.rhosts
        trix.dircon.co.uk root
        trix.dircon.co.uk gps

It can fail for other reasons, try re-installing the packages, then
look carefully at your ~/.rhosts and /etc/hosts files. Also use
rlogin or telnet + who to get the reverse lookup name used.

getting rshd to run in Linux. please help

you know, i'm having a tough time with rsh myself.  although a different
problem.  the remote machine is a Sun SS20 running SunOS 5.4  the local machine
is a 386dx33 running linux 2.0.0

the remote machine is called orac the local machine is called rtfm, not that it
matters.

if i type this from the linux machine:

rsh -l wonko orac who
nothing happens
rsh -l wonko orac who >> who.txt
who.txt is created, but nothing put in it.
rsh -l wonko orac who '>>' who.txt
who.txt is created as should be on the local machine and filled with the
results of who.

so it's working, it's just not getting the SS20's stdout to my stdout.

did this make a bit of sense??

1. Getting linux to run on new hardware, help please.

Hello all,
I have a motorola 68ez328 board that I'm trying to get linux to run
on.  I bought the uclinux distribution for the 68ez328.  My problem is
that the distribution compiles in a lot of things I don't need, like
networking, etc.  I just want a minimum set of linux to run on the
board, like tasks, memory management, and the serial port.  Can anyone
get me started on how to stip out the stuff I don't need, or how
to "port" the linux to my board.  I have searched the web for anything
on porting linux to no avail.

Thanks in advance,
  Chris
