Linux Newbie, Installation Problems with Redhat 5.2

Post by Suhas Achant » Thu, 21 Jan 1999 04:00:00

I have a Dell Dimension XPSR 450 with 14.4 GB hard disk , I already have NT
and 98 installed. I am trying to install RedHat Linux 5.2 in an extended
partition. I chose fdisk and I created 3 logical parititions(hda4-6) in my
extended partition hda3. I chose the option write the partition tables and
then quit out of the fdisk which took me back to the install screen, when I
selected "done" to proceed to the next screen. The next screen "Setup
filesystems" does not see my logical partitions that I created. If go back
to fdisk and display the partitions info. it displays the correct
information. The setup filesystems screen only show the hda3 which is my
extended partition.  I have sent couple of messages to Redhat, they asked to
enter the disk geometry and that did not work either, now I stopped getting
any response from Redhat support. Any help in this regard would be greatly
appreciated.

Suhas Achanta,

You will find multiple operating systems on one computer difficult for setup
procedures.  Powerquest makes two software products, PartitionMagic and Boot
Magic, that work effortlessly and accurately.  These two products are
definitely worth purchasing today!  Load them under Windows 98.  Run it first
under Windows 98.  It will find the NT, Windows 98, and the linux partitions
you created.  If the linux partitions do not exist.  Use PartitionMagic 4.x to
create the primary linux partition while in Windows 98.  Be sure to leave
64-128mg unused partition space for the linux setup to convert to a swap file
when you later run the linux setup software.  Bootmagic will permit you to
choose which os you would like to start without any headaches.  These two
products even permit Dos and Windows 3.1 partitions to be created and os
bootable!

hope this helps!

Brian

Did you use the dos-based fdisk? If so, I had a similar problem
although it was with partitioning with PartitionMagic. (Which is a great
program incidentally.)

Here's what you do, next time you sit down to install, and you get
to the part that asks about mounting filesystems and using diskdruid or
fdisk, use fdisk.

Make sure that your extended partition is of Type 5. It might be
set to another value. When I installed RH5.2 just a few nights ago,
Partiton Magic had set the extended partiton type to some Win95(LBA)
extended partition type. Swithcing it to type 5 did the trick. (Although
I wonder about potential problems given that the drive is larger than
8Gb.)

1. Redhat Linux 5.2 installation problem -- Help!

Hi there,

I have the following problem and need your help!

I tried to install The Complete Redhat Linux OS 5.2 deluxe, on my system with:
Windows 95, Intel Pentium 75 MHZ, RAM 32 MB, two hard disks, disk 1 (IDE
ctrl 1, master) with
840MB (C:), disk 2 (IDE ctrl 1, slave) with 4.3 GB, in which 2.1
partitioned as DOS/WIN (D:),
the remaining 2.2 GB was originally partitioned as DOS/WIN (E: 2.1 GB,
F: 100MB) and
then dos/fdisk was used to remove the partions E: and F: for linux, as
suggested by the installation guide. CDROM (24x) was used for the
installation. The system has video card (S3?), no network card, SCSI or
ISDN adapter.

During installation, I used customer (not server or workstation) installation,
and did the folowing partitions on disk 2:
/dev/hdb6 / 256MB
/dev/hdb7 /usr 512
/dev/hdb8 /var 256
/dev/hdb9 /usr/src 101
/dev/hdb10 /tmp 101
/dev/hdb11      70 (linux swap)
/dev/hdb12 /usr/local 54
/dev/hdb13 /opt 54
/dev/hdb14 /boot 16
/dev/hdb15 /home 512
and 100 MB is still free after the partitions.

after the partition, I clicked ok, selected to format all the partitions,
and selected the packages to install. Then it shows:
Running, Making ext2 filesystem on /dev/hdb6... and goes on
until everything done (the last one is /dev/hdb8, /var) and then
the next screen shows:
Error, Mount failed. Invalid argument.
Repeated installation all resulted in the same error.

Can somebody tell me what's wrong? Is it with the partition?

Thank you for your help.
