There is a 'restorescreen' option that sounds like what you want: ':help
options'. At least on vim >= 5.4. This subject is explained in the
documentation (somewhere).
Also, I notice that setting term to 'xterm' (RH6.1), this works like you
want, but term=xterm-color behaves quite differently...FWIW.
