Music CD's play, but not computer generated sounds

Post by Ken and Kara Plak » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

I've got a head scratcher,  I am running RH6.1 and I have a Creative
ViBRA16X PnP(sb16).  I run sndconfig with no problem, but I cannot hear
the test sounds in sb or midi.  I can however, use the music CD player.
I have all the volumes on my mixer turned to max.  Dmsg shows everything
installing properly:

Soundblaster audio driver Copyright (C) by Hannu Savolainen 1993-1996
SB 4.16 detected OK (240)
YM3812 and OPL-3 driver Copyright (C) by Hannu Savolainen, Rob Hooft
1993-1996

When I try a "cat message.wav > /dev/audio" there is a delay, but
nothing happnens.  specs are below.  Any help greatly appreciated.

I was having trouble setting up an es1371 in RH6.1, kernel 2.2.12-20.
Sndconfig would find it, the audio sample would play, sending a .wav to
/dev/dsp worked, audio cd's worked, but I got NO system sounds in KDE.

Seems that "/usr/bin/startkde" is looking for soundcard info in a file
called "/etc/sysconfig/sound" while sndconfig writes that info in a file
  called "/etc/sysconfig/soundcard". I edited "/usr/bin/startkde", changed
the reference to "sound" to "soundcard" and now EVERYTHING, system sound
  included, seems to work.

1. Can not play music cd's

When I run cdp I do not get any sound. It shows it is playing. I have run
sndconfig and it does play the test sound. Have not tried to play any other
type of sounds yet. I have tried this as root and a normal user. What might
be causing this problem?
Thanks for any help.
