A hacked SVGA server (giving you the TrueColor modes you desire: 8, 16bpp)
is available!

I downloaded the compiled binary and changed my X links and added the
suggested stuff to my XF86Config, and it's beautiful now.

It's not as fast as an accelerated driver, but seems fairly good.  

Try it.  My Thinkpad is now a competent Linux box!
