Adding partions??

Post by Adam Byron Smi » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

Hi,

I had Linux Mandrake installed on a 1 gig partion. Was working beautifully, but I
stared to run out of space, so I trimmed down a win98 partion to the bare
minimun. Now I have a couple of larger partions. the partion table looks
something like this:

/dev/hda1       win98   800 megs
/dev/hda2       linux   1.5 gigs    (empty)
/dev/hda3       linux   700 megs    (empty)
/dev/hda4       dos ext. 1 gig      (where 5 and 6 are)
/dev/hda5       /       930 megs    (mandrake 7.0)
/dev/hda6       swap    70 megs

I noticed that /usr was where MOST of the disk usage is, so I wanted to move it
over to hda2. How do I do this? I have an idea, but I want to make sure
with you experts out there.

Please leave out No details. Assume I'm an idiot :)

Thanx,
Adam

Read the hardisk-upgrade HOWT (or was it a mini-howt?) it is very
detailed.

Adding partions??

Post by sur.. » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

I recently did exact thing. I took a partition (hdb1) from win98 and
mount /home there.

Here is what I did:

$ mkfs.ext2 /dev/hdb1 <enter>
$ cfdisk /dev/hdb <enter> (note: I have Debian so I had cfdisk
available, did not tried fdisk)
 - at cfdisk window I find this hdb1 vfat partition and changed it to
ext2
by selecting 83 (I think, 83 for ext2)
 - and then added this new hdb1 with /home to /etc/fstab:
   (/dev/hdb1 /home ext2 defaults 0 2 )
 and then reboot it

NOTE: as a procoution, before I started, I backed up my /home to another
directory (mv /home /usr/home.bak <enter>). But I didn't need to use the
back-up file since i didn't loose anything.

What does fdisk or cfdisk say about the partition table layout?

The amount of mounted usable space will vary depending on how the
filesystems are initialized, since the filesystem overhead will vary.
