Unable to boot Linux from disk (VFS:Unable to mount root)

Post by Sudarshan Ranganatha » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

I had installed RH6.1 on a disk connected to a Promise Ultra/66
controller. Had done so by passing the I/O addresses of ide2 and ide3 at
the LILO boot prompt. Was able to boot until I had to drop one of the PCI
cards from the PC. Now I can only boot from the boot floppy using the I/O
addresses and the kernel recognises the drives on the Ultra/66, but when I
try the same with the installed kernel, I get a VFS: Unable to mount root
message. Any pointers??

1. Boot prob. with RH 5.1 - 'Kernel panic:VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:05

I have an AMD K100(I think) cpu, with a large 8G drive, sorry the info's
not exact.

I have two kernels, the first one is the default kernel from the
install, and the second one I built from 'make menuconfig'. After I ran
'make zlilo' I discovered that the old kernel would boot but the second
wouldn't boot with the error:

"Kernel panic:VFS:Unable to mount root fs on 03:05"

This I find very strange, since the default installation kernel will
boot with no problems. Although the partition table was slightly
corrupted earlier by an invalid ending cylinder(?), but again this
hasn't seemed to matter with Dos, W95, winnt4 that I also have on my
computer. I'm using system commander.
I do have three hard drives in my system, could the 03 refer to the
third hard drive? but why would Linux look to the 3rd drive for the
mount point?
Please e-mail if you have any suggestions or post to the group, my
e-mail is

Thanks,

Does anyone know of any utilities for linux that can repair the
partition table? I'd rather not have to get Norton Doctor if possible
