libc 5.4.44 installation problems

1. Problems with libc.so.5.4.44

I downloaded the binary release from tsx-11 and installed it.  When I
rebooted I found a couple of show stoppers on my system:

xdm wouldn't start (from latest binary release of XF86)
ctwm wouln't run (compiled from sources on this machine)
pppd segfaults immediately (compiled against libc-5, version 2.2pl0)

I reverted to 5.4.38 and everything runs again.

Has anyone else had similar problems?

BTW, .44 extracted to /usr/lib while all previous releases installed
to /lib.  Is this a permanent change?

Later,
e.
