No "|" in xterm (Redhat 4.1)

I have a minor problem with xterm and nxterm not giving me the pipe
character (UK keyboard and UK keymap). I'm using RedHat 4.1 out of the
box (as yet).

Here's what I've read so far:

xmodmap, metrox (I'm using the metroX server), showkey, xev, nxterm
manpages, the FAQ, the keyboard HOWTO

By using xev I can tell that the pipe character (shifted slash on my
keyboard) is giving me "|", but if press the key in an nxterm I get
nothing. I can't find out what to fiddle with from the nxterm manpage.

Can someone point me in the right direction, please?

1. I can't get my "|" or "" keys to work!

I'm using linux on an old HP-RS/20 with what *LOOKS* to be a normal
101-key keyboard. The problem is, three very important characters don't
work right: "(double-quote), | (pipe), and \(backslash).

I was able to go into the kbmap file and assign the pipe to a shifted
number 5 (since I never need a percent sign) because I needed it so bad.
However, I'd prefer to set my keymappings correctly... but I don't have
any way to glean the scan-codes from the key-presses. Is there a
utility for linux so that I can find out what the scan codes on this
wierd machine indeed are?
