Adding a SCSI controller changing boot drive to SCSI drive

Adding a SCSI controller changing boot drive to SCSI drive

Post by Magix new » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

I have replaced all my IDE drives with SCSI ones.
I know which SCSI hard drive my doot disk is on sda7.

I have a boot floppy that was created for the IDE system
I can not boot linux from HD and do not want to re-install.

Can I modify the boot floppy to add a driver for my adaptec 2940 card. Do I
have to rebuild anything on the boot floppy.

Any instructions.

* find another running linux box.
* build a kernel with scsi controller driver built-in.
* make bzdisk (this will call dd) to install it to the floppy.
* use rdev on the floppy to adjust to boot from sda7 instead of the
default of the machine where you built it.

hope this helps.

Reinstall RH6.2 CD.  During the installation prompt type in "expert text".
The first menu is Device Driver Install.  Press Cancel
You are in the SCSI/Network menu.  Select your SCSI card.
You should be able to install RH 6.2 onto your SCSI hard drive.

1. SCSI ID changed after adding SCSI Controller

RH7.1
I have a Compaq DL580 Server with an internal SCSI-RAID-Controller
type: integrated smart array Controller. When I boot, it is detected
as ida0.

Now I added another PCI SCSI-Raid-Controller (Slot 3) type: Smart
array 431.
The Server still starts to boot. LILO has no Problem to find the boot
Partition. At the time the Kernel loads the SCSI driver it hangs with
Kernel panic because it has assigns ida0 to the smart array 431 and
ida1 to the integrated smart array Controller and therefore can not
find the /boot and the / Partitions on ida0.

Some of the last messages I get:
Compaq SMART2 Driver (v 2.4.2)
cpqarray: Finding drives on ida0
cpqarray: Finding drives on ida1

I changed IRQ order without success.
I changed fstab (ida0 > ida1). Then the Kernel can load the driver but
later the OS cannot mount the Partitions.

Any clues? Is this a HW or a LINUX Problem?
