Xterm line-wrapping

Xterm line-wrapping

Post by C.K. Smi » Sun, 14 Jul 1996 04:00:00

It seems that occasionally my shell in an XTERM window won't line-wrap
properly...  It chops off lines at the window boundary instead of kindly
printing the rest on subsequent lines.  I'm not sure how this could
occur sometimes and not others.  I would greatly appreciate any
suggestions, or solutions. :)

Thanks

This happens to me to.  Only after I installed ncurses 1.9.9e and only after I
run an ncurses app in the xterm.  Don't know how to fix it though.

1. xterm + vi + line-wrapping = freeze

Running Solaris 9 on SunBlade 100, last patched May 22...

When running vi in a xterm, editing a file with long lines
that wrap (e.g. 200-char lines on a 80x24 xterm), if I position
the cursor near the first line-wrap (e.g. at char 75) and
type or middle-click to paste some text that would wrap to the
next line, the xterm freezes and has to be killed (losing
the vi session)

I reproduced it on a new account to make sure it's not
my environment, using both CDE and gnome2, and with both
/usr/openwin/bin/xterm and /opt/sfw/bin/xterm (Xfree86).

It also happens if the xterm is on a remote host, regardless
of Solaris version of the remote host (tried on Solaris 2.3 & 7)

It does not happen if I set TERM to vt100 before starting vi.
It does not happen with "vim".
It does not happen with dtterm or gnome-terminal even if TERM=xterm

Is this a bug introduced on a recent patch?
Perhaps something similar to the /kernel/strmod/ptem bug that
has been reported for Solaris 2.6?
